WHAT IS ORAL SURGERY?

Oral surgery covers several procedures that target the structures of the mouth, jaws, gums, and teeth. For these procedures, you want an oral surgeon with specialized training to achieve the best results with the safest process. Below are some of the oral surgery procedures we office at The Smile Specialists.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal is probably the most common form of oral surgery available. Many patients come in for this procedure as teens or adults to remove wisdom teeth that have become impacted or otherwise cannot grow in properly. By taking out your wisdom teeth, you can prevent a range of health concerns and protect your smile overall. Though this is a surgery, it is highly safe, with almost no patients ever experiencing any complications.

Dental Implants

On the other side of oral surgery, dental implants are a way to replace teeth that have been pulled or lost for other reasons. Dental implants are a long-lasting, natural-looking way to get your smile back to a full set of pearly whites. Each replacement is individually placed and fully custom-made. So once your implant has been installed, it should blend in perfectly with your natural teeth without anyone noticing anything other than how full your smile is.

Bone Grafting

Extended tooth loss or even aging can result in losing jawbone mass. If you have lost a certain amount of bone, you may need a bone grafting procedure before you can get dental implants or other dental treatments. Fortunately, the name may sound intimidating but the process is quite comfortable and straightforward. When performed by an expert oral surgeon, this procedure lets you build back up your jawbone mass through your body's natural regenerative abilities.

Sinus Lift Surgery

A sinus lift is a type of bone grafting that focuses on getting your upper jaw ready for implants or other procedures. Most patients can get their sinus lift after a single visit to our office with results gradually appearing as your body fully heals and responds to the treatment. In most cases, you should be fully ready after about six months, then you can get started on your dental implants or other procedure ASAP.

Buccal Fat Removal

The buccal fat pad located in our cheeks can often cause a significant roundness to the face. In many cases, no amount of dieting or exercise can reduce this fat pad, resulting in a rounder face that can be at odds with your preferred aesthetic. With buccal fat removal, your oral surgeon at The Smile Specialists can remove these pads and give your face a more dynamic, contoured shape.

Do I Need an Oral Surgeon?

If any of the above procedures sound like something you need, then an oral surgeon is right for you. The first step is to come in for your consultation appointment for an examination. We can work with you to see what your symptoms or goals are, and then match you with the right procedure to get you where you want to go. In some cases, we can get started on your treatment the same day as your initial visit.

Planning for Oral Surgery

While oral surgery is usually lighter than other surgical procedures, there are still some factors to keep in mind. In some cases, you may need sedation or anesthesia to stay comfortable. So be sure to plan for someone to drive you home after your visit in these cases. There can also be a brief recovery time, although the mouth tends to bounce back from surgery quite quickly. Still, many patients take at least a day or two off from work or school after their procedures. Lastly, to minimize the risk of any complications, be sure to follow your oral surgeon's full instructions after your surgery.
