What Are The Benefits of Straight Teeth and a Correct Bite?
Crooked teeth have overlapping surfaces that make it difficult to properly clean every surface of the tooth. Such a situation can lead to cavities, gum disease, tooth loss, or expensive dental work. Crooked teeth also have uneven biting surfaces of the teeth which causes uneven wear of the teeth.
Spaces between teeth can trap food particles that also make those teeth more likely to have cavities. Incorrect bites or misaligned jaws can lead to a range of health concerns, including:
- Migraines or headaches
- Joint issues (TMD / TMJ)
- Asymmetrical jaw growth (for example, the chin can grow and point toward the left)
- Bruxism or grinding
- And even respiratory issues
In other words, braces can make a huge difference for kids and adults alike.
Who are braces right for?
Braces are excellent for those who don't want the responsibility of remembering to wear their clear aligners all day. Braces also treat all types of alignment and bite issues, including:
- Overbites
- Underbites
- Crossbites
- Open bites
- Deep bites
- Extremely crooked teeth
- Improper bites
Additionally, braces can work for a wider range of patients than clear aligners. In some cases, Invisalign simply cannot correct misalignment. Braces, however, are a tried and true method of correction for all ages.

What are Kids Braces / Early Treatment / Phase I?
You might have come across each of these terms before. In short, each of these terms describes an orthodontic procedure for children before all the permanent teeth are present. It typically takes place between the ages of 7-10 years of age. The main goal is to correct major problems with the jaws growing improperly, overcrowding, or making enough room for all the permanent teeth.
Benefits of Kids Braces
With early treatment, we can prevent major jaw discrepancies before they progress too far. Examples include underbites, overbites, or poorly growing upper or lower jaws. By treating these early on, we can potentially prevent a child from undergoing orthognathic surgery in the future or from having under-developed upper or lower jaws.
We can also prevent a range of problems, such as:
- Teeth from running into each other and getting stuck (impacted) in the bone
- Teeth oing in the wrong direction and eating away the root of another tooth
Invisalign First (Clear Aligners for Kids)
We offer Invisalign First as a treatment option for phase I as well. With this treatment, kids can wear Invisalign and benefit from having a clear option for their growing smile. Kids also benefit from no food restrictions and can continue to eat what they want without parents having to worry about breaking brackets and slowing down treatment. It is also easier to brush and floss with Invisalign, making taking care of their teeth easier. And we even have special stickers for their aligner if they want to add some color!
Expanders for Kids
We can also widen the jaws at this young age so that there is enough room for all the permanent teeth, potentially preventing extractions (or teeth needing to be removed) later on. Expanding the arches (usually done with an expander appliance) also provides a beautiful, full, wide smile that most people seek. It also helps open up the airway, which provides improved breathing and other airway benefits.
State-of-the-Art Imaging
Since we take 3D imaging scans, we can assess kids' airways and uncover significant problems such as reduced or small airways. Such concerns are associated with obstructed breathing and poor disrupted sleep, which can cause many issues during these formative years.
